Paper Pilot is the first book I authored and designed. An editor friend asked if I could make a book about airplanes, and so I did. The photos are mostly scans I made at the National Archives. My design assistant at the time, Ben Haynes, had been a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force before he was my student at the University of Connecticut. He contributed the bulk of illustrations and airplane descriptions. His name appears on the cover of the first edition because my editor claimed that the book wouldn’t sell if it had a woman’s name on the cover. (She may have been right, as this book sold more than twice what the others did.)
