Autumn de Wilde was my favorite photographer to commission in LA when I was art directing RES, a magazine about video, music, and art in the mid-2000s. When she asked if I would design I book about Elliott Smith, one of my favorite musicians, I was over the moon. We worked together to create filmic sequences from contact sheets and proofs, thinking through how the images would read throughout the book, interrupted by interviews on cream-colored paper. It was important to me to be true to his character as well as the personality of all the locations in Los Angeles where they did their shoots.
